Tip #1 for choosing web hosting is to be certain you get enough bandwidth with your hosting plan.
When I started building and hosting websites on line 5 years ago I made a huge mistake. I chose a $2 hosting plan that didn't offer much bandwidth. I found out the hard way too. I was doing a PPC campaign to drive traffic to my new site. I was making sales for a few days and then for the next week...no sales. I had no idea what was wrong so I visited my own web site to find a page that said "Bandwidth Limit Exceeded". I was so new I didn't even know what that meant. I emailed my hosting provider (more on this in tip #2) and finally got a response a few days later that said I would have to purchase more bandwidth before my site would be live again...lesson learned...Now any hosting plan I purchase has unlimited bandwidth.
Tip #2 is always choose a web hosting company that offers 24/7 customer support
I mentioned having to e-mail for support in tip #1. That is not the way to go. Now any hosting company I choose always offers 24/7 live customer support. There is nothing worse than having a problem with your site and not being able to talk to a tech right there and then to help you fix the problem...Always choose a company with 24/7 live customer support.
Tip #3 is to be sure you get enough disk space.
Today more than ever the Internet is content driven. If you plan to get to the top of the natural listings in the search engines for your targeted niche, you will need to add a lot of content to your site. That's where plenty of disk space comes into the picture. There are hosting companies on line that offer unlimited disk space in their hosting plans for $5 to $8 a month. No need to pay more or settle for less than unlimited disk space in the plan you choose.
Tip #4 is to get a free domain name with your web hosting plan.
Hey it's out there so why not take advantage of it. Save yourself the $10 a year on a .com domain name. Many companies offer it as a standard feature in their hosting plans.
Tip #5 for choosing web hosting is to get a 99.9% guarantee of server up time.
If your web hosting companies server is down so is your website. This also happened to me early on in my on line career. Again doing a PPC campaign to send visitors to my site and it went down. No one could even see my site. No I was not only losing money by making no sales...I was also losing money by paying for traffic to be sent to my site. Another hard and expensive lesson learned... Moral of the story....Get a guarantee that your site will be up 99.9% of the time.
6th and final tip is don't pay too much.
There is so much competition in the web hosting industry that there is no need to pay more than 5 to 8 bucks a month for your hosting service. There are a number of companies that offer unlimited bandwidth, unlimited disk space, free domain name, and 24/7 customer service for under $10 a month. Unless you need a dedicated server there simply is no reason to pay more. And I am talking about very high quality award winning hosting companies for that price too.
